Arik Air is the largest commercial Nigerian airline offering domestic, regional and international flights from its air hubs in Kotoka, Murtala and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airports. In addition to being the de facto official air carrier in Nigeria, the airline is also the national carrier in Sierra Leone.
Established in 2002 and headquartered at the Arik Air Aviation Center in Ikeja, Lagos State, the airline operates a fleet of 26 aircraft, flying to 31 destinations, including Nigeria, domestically, as well as a number of other Western African countries. The airline operates over 120 flights daily, and employs over 2000 employees directly.
Arik Air acquired the now defunct Nigeria Airways infrastructure approximately 3 years after the latter's liquidation.
In 2007 Arik Airways was able to recapitalise in line with a governmental directive aimed at ensuring better airline safety and service delivery. Subsequent to meeting the NCAA's criteria, the airline was again registered. It was also granted permission to fly to the USA by the US Department of Transportation.
By August 2010, Arik Air had transported over 5 million air passengers. By September 2012, the airline doubled this number, carrying its 10 millionth passenger on September 2012. Both these milestones were reached flying along the airline's Lagos to Johannesburg flights.
On 14 May 2014, Arik announced that it would be increasing its flights along the Lagos-Monrovia and Lagos-Luanda routes to keep up with passenger demand. The airline is also quoted as saying that it plans to increase its flights to India, offering direct flights to India as it seeks to capture business and leisure travelers along this route.
Existing flights from Nigeria to India typically need to route via South Africa, Dubai or Ethiopia, making for a long and energy sapping trip; the airline believes that a direct flight route would therefore be in high demand among business travellers, and those travelling to India for medical purposes, in particular.
While the Arik Air network is predominantly based in and around Nigeria, the airline also flies to the US, Amsterdam, Johannesburg, London, Madrid and Trinidad and Tobago.
Arik Air faces competition from international airlines such as Air France, Ethiopian Airlines, British Airways, SAA, Lufthansa, KLM, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Egypt Air and Kenya Airways, among others.
As of May 2013, Arik Air's fleet comprises of Airbus A330s and A340s, as well as Boeing 737s, Boeing 747s, Boeing 777s as well as a number of Bombardier aircraft models along its domestic routes.
