The airline was founded in 1934 after Union Airlines had been acquired by the SA government. Since those days, the airline has grown to become the foremost airline in Africa. SAL is a proud member of the Star Alliance Network, It's air miles programme is called SAA Voyager, with air miles accruable across the Star Alliance network.

SAL's cross-border itineraries are routed via Johannesburg, rather than Cape Town.
