Lufthansa, also known as Deutsche Lufthansa AG, is the German national flag carrier airline. It is also the largest European airline, both in terms of its fleet size and the total number of passengers carried per annum. Established in 1953, and with headquarters in Cologne, Germany, Lufthansa operates scheduled passenger and cargo flight services out of their air hubs in Munich, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf.
Lufthansa operates scheduled flights to around 200 international destinations in over 75 countries in Africa, North and South America, Europe and Asia. The airline also operates flights to 18 German domestic destinations.
The airline also has partnership agreements with Air Malta, Air India and Luxair, and also has a codesharing agreement with JetBlue Airways.
Lufhansa is a member of Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance, and its frequent flier air miles programme is called Miles & More.
From South Africa's OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, Lufthansa flies to Britain, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Lisbon, Athens Madrid, Munich and Paris, to name but a few European flight destinations. To check out their top flight specials to Europe, click here.
Recent financial performance
The 2010-2011 economic recession hit the airline hard; a loss of over 380 million euro was recorded in the first quarter of 2012. This dire performance led to the airline to cutting around 20% of its administrative jobs (around 3500 positions). A restructuring exercise was also conducted to help restore profitability.
By early May 2014, the airline confirmed that it had reached its first-quarter financial targets, and were sticking to its annual targets despite rising competition levels in the Germany passenger flights market.
During the same week, the airline also announced that it will be deploying the world's longest aircraft, the B747-8 along the Mumbai-Frankfurt flight route, effective 15 July 2014.
Lufthansa's rival airlines include the likes of Air Berlin, TUIfly and Germania.
The Lufthansa Fleet
The airline operates a fleet of around 280 aircraft, with the Airbus and Boeing ranges being well represented. The average age of Lufthansa's fleet is just over 12 years.
The airline counts Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Swiss European Air Lines, Edelweiss Air, Eurowings, Lufthansa CityLine and Lufthansa Cargo among its subsidiaries.
