Emirates is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which in turn is fully owned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai, a government owned entity. Being the largest airline in the Middle East, Emirates operates over 3 000 weekly scheduled flights via Dubai International Airport, its operational hub. From there, Emiratas flies to over 130 cities in 74 countries worldwide.
Surprisingly, Emirates is not a member of any of the top 3 global airline alliances, being the Star Alliance, Oneworld and SkyTeam. The airline does, however, have numerous codeshare agreements in place with the likes of Air Malta, Air Mauritius, Jet Airways and South African Airways.
The airline is counted in the world's top 10 airlines in terms of metrics such as revenue, fleet size and passenger kilometres as of 2007. Emirates is rated as a 4-star airline by Skytrax, and is renowned for its commitment to operational excellence and safety, as well as it's customer services innovations. By 2012, Emirates ranked in the top 4 airlines in the world in terms of its number of international passengers carried, as well as the scheduled passenger kilometres flown.
Emirates SkyCargo handles the airline's cargo business, and is also a significant regional air cargo carrier.
Apart from flying to around 133 cities on six continents, Emirates also operates four of the world's longest on-stop commercial passenger flights, namely to LA, San Francisco, Houston and Dallas.
Emirates is one of the world's only airlines to operate a full fleet of wide-body aircraft. Its mix of aircraft include Airbuses and Boeings, and the Boeing 777, in particular. The airline has purchased a whopping 200 new aircraft in 2013 alone. Flextracks software is used to plan and optimise rout efficiencies in relation to load factor. Combined with a particularly fuel efficient fleet, this gives Emirates a competitive advantage in the environmental stakes.
Emirates has steadily built itself a name as a leader in the passenger aviation industry, especially in terms of the quality of their in-flight service experience, combined with rapid growth in market share - not to mention consistent profitability for 25 years straight. The industry accolades have followed; in 2012, for example, Emirates was ranked 8th globally by Air Transport World in the Airline of the Year awards. The major accolade, however, came when the airline was voted Airline of the Year 2013 by Skytrax.
The airline is a major international sports sponsor, and proudly supports Cricket Australia, the Emirates Team New Zealand sailing team, as well as English Premier League Club Arsenal.
