What Inspired the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon
While the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was run for the very first time by a small group of runners in 2007, it was inspired by the 490 BC Greek legend, Pheidippides.
A Greek soldier, Pheidippiesis fabled to have run 25 miles from a battlefield near Marathon all the way to Athens in order to spread the news of the Greek victory over the Persians. When his message had been delivered to the right people, he is said to have collapsed and died. It is this legend that the Cape Town Marathon is modelled on.
The Marathon is run on the Sunday nearest to 24 September each year which is South Africa’s Heritage Day. In 2010, the Cape Town Marathon saw a massive increase in participants which has steadily grown since.
