Cape Town is recognised for Table Mountain, otherwise referred to as ‘The Mountain’, with its spectacular outlook over the city and well beyond. And then there’s Cape Point, where you can spend hours merely taking in the most wonderful views of the ocean. And, apparently, South Africa’s most visited destination also belongs to Cape Town – the Victoria & Albert Waterfront – an ideal locale for those who really do enjoy free entertainment and shopping.
But there is more to Cape Town than this.
Here we introduce another aspect to Cape Town – just a handful of the dining establishments that you certainly should mark down on your to-do list.
Blah Blah Bar
84 Kloof Street, Oranjezicht
Visit the Blah Blah Bar on Kloof Street if you’re looking for an impressive atmosphere, attention to detail, and great food at an excellent price. The staff are thoroughly knowledgeable and the service in general is worthy of comment – helpful and yet not at all intrusive.
Phizante Kraal Restaurant
Groot Phesantekraal Farm, Klipheuwel Road, Durbanville
This restaurant has been established in a cow shed which dates all the way back to 1767. But don’t let that put you off. The cuisine is of contemporary South African style. The menus vary week to week, month to month. The food is diverse and as fresh as can be, while being sourced from the farm itself. It’s not just about the food at Phizante Kraal Restaurant, but the food in itself is plenty enough to serve as an attraction in its own right.
Zebro’s
74a Van Riebeek Road, Kuilsriver
Not to be confused with zebras, Zebro’s represents a traditional-style restaurant where the food is prepared in the ‘old’ South African way, using wood coals. This establishment’s core menu is comprised of Russinn-style sausages, chicken on the bone, chicken burgers, and fresh salads together with a pile of French fries. Relatively basic fair maybe, but rather delightful all the same.
The Hussar Grill
107A Main Road, Green Point
A casual affair, but classy all the same, with excellent service to boot. The staff are knowledgeable about the food and the wine, and the food does anything but disappoint. If you’re keen on a very fine steak, there are few better places in Cape Town than that of the Hussar Grill at Green Point.
Arriba! Afro Latin Café
230 Long Street
A nicely eclectic blend of local and foreign influence. Café Arriba! offers a restaurant, bar, and a courtyard for its clientele to take in the vibrant, passionate atmosphere. The food together with the ambience is a fusion of African and Latin. Further, for those who enjoy live band performances, or the chance to learn a Latin dance or two – tango, cha-cha, and salsa among them, Arriba! makes for a fine choice.
Lucky Fish & Chips
71 Regent Road, Sea Point
Lucky Fish & Chips is indeed part of a small chain of restaurants, and they do indeed specialize in gourmet fast food. But don’t let that put you off, since they always serve fresh fish and make it their key policy to avoid frozen fish as part of the menu. This simplistic dinner is perfect for the Brits in town who are desperately keen to get their fill of the finest fish and chips in the area.
