Founded in 2000, TripAdvisor is an international travel reviews and booking site offering user generated destination reviews, ranked hotel accommodation and flight bookings online. It also offers vacation rentals, travel guides, recommended things to do per destination, as well as restaurant reviews submitted by TripAdvisor users.

The company was spun off from Expedia in a public offering during December 2011, and has become a leading travel brand internationally, including in South Africa.

TripAdvisor’s various websites attract in excess of 50 million unique visitors per month, with over 100 million user generated accommodation, restaurant and destination reviews made easily accessible via the site’s search engine. Review scores are aggregated, giving site users an accurate and reliable travel resource – crowd-sourcing style.

By combining directory-style information and user reviews, TripAdvisor has managed to create a go-to travel resource relied on by millions of travellers worldwide. The company was an early adopter of user generated content (UGC), a decision which has paid off handsomely over time; today TripAdvisor generates revenues in excess of $762 million per annum (2012).

Use of TripAdvisor is free, with user reviews submitted voluntarily. The site features numerous revenue models, including advertising and booking engines for flights and hotel accommodation.
