Amazing food and wine are among the many reasons thousands of people jet off on flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town every year. So, if you’re planning a trip to the Mother City, you want to make the most of it while you’re there.
The trouble is – where do you start? Here’s a heads-up about some of the Stellenbosch winelands top gems for wining and dining.
1. Rust en Vrede
If you’re looking for the finest dining around, it pays to go where the chefs go. Rust en Vrede is a favourite among top name chefs.
This is where Gregory Czarnecki, head chef at The Restaurant at Waterkloof, goes when he’s celebrating a special occasion. Bertus Basson, of Overture fame, rates Rust en Vredeas the best restaurant in town.
They go there for the welcoming atmosphere, gorgeous views and excellent service as well as the pretty, vibrant and delicious dishes.
The centrepiece at Rust-en-Vrede is the kitchen which whips up unique four and six-course meals in full view of diners. The wine list is exceptional, featuring enough local and international vintages to please every palate.
For a light bite, the Tasting Room lunch experience presents a two item menu of salmon and steak. It’s made extra special by the setting. Tables are set under the oaks overlooking the vineyards and hills.
2. Jordan Restaurant at Jordan Wine Estate
Not only does Jordan occupy a prime position on one of Stellenbosch’s most gorgeous wine estates, it’s also headed up by expert chefs, George Jardine and Kyle Burns. The dishes are meticulously crafted and served up by cheerful, professional staff.
Cheese-lovers swoon at the walk-in room that’s dedicated to local cheeses of every kind. From Blue Rock to gruyere, you’ll find your favourites here. The Bakery is another hit with its relaxed atmosphere and gorgeous outdoor setting.
3. The Table Restaurant at De Meye Wine Farm
The Table recreates scenes straight from the French winelands with it’s beautiful arbour setting and historic white-washed buildings. The fare here complements the sophisticated rustic theme, featuring farm to table fare of the highest level.
Hosts, Leigh Williamson and Brendan Thorncroft have managed to create an uplifting experience that lingers long after you’ve put your cutlery down. During the wintertime, the ambience is recreated indoors around a cosy fire with awesome views of the countryside.
4. The Manor Kitchen at Lanzerac Wine Estate
The Lanzerac Hotel has risen like a phoenix out of the devastation caused by a fire in 2017 to reclaim its place as one of Stellenbosch’s top eateries. In fact, after its refurb, the Lanzerac Hotel is considered one of the most beautiful hotels in the world.
Lanzerac Wine Estate is one of the oldest wine farms in Stellenbosch and has been involved in the art of the grape for about 300 years. The Manor Kitchen is one of four restaurants on the estate and it’s by far the most extravagant. Dramatically poised chandeliers, huge proportions and large leaded windows create an opulent, old-world ambience.
The classic breakfast buffet is a daily hit at The Manor Kitchen, while Sunday lunches and special event dinners feature locally-grown fare like blackened sirloin of beef, seared tuna niçoise and bacon-wrapped pork fillet.
For a lower-key experience, the Lanzerac Deli dishes up homemade breads, pastries and artisan charcuterie. After-hours, the gorgeous historic Taphuis Bar is awash with patrons enjoying gourmet pub grub.
5. Overture at Hidden Valley Wines
mpressively set among the foothills of the towering Helderberg Mountains, Overture is a hit amongst foodies and beloved for its locally-lekker cuisine.
Chef Bertus Basson charmingly draws inspiration for his menu from his mother’s home cooking and it’s a hit with all who venture here. Some of the unique dishes you’ll get to sample here include slow-cooked lamb rib and kidney, kale roast silverfish and chalmar sirloin.
Overture is one of five restaurants owned by this innovative chef.
